Cate McGuire

Cate McGuire is a Toronto based multi-disciplinary artist with an extensive background in architecture and design, having both a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Concordia and a postgraduate degree in Architecture from the University of British Columbia.

In her work, McGuire builds spaces and narratives from found images and cultural ephemera. She uses the languages of art and design, combined with the imagery of popular culture, to make projects that attempt to bridge issues in design and art.

Through seemingly familiar spaces and landscapes McGuire creates uncanny scenes with the intent of eliciting an emotional connection, evoking a broad range of feelings such as nostalgia (longing), apprehension, and even love. These images are combined in larger organizing structures that hint at connections, through proximity and sequence, and imply a larger narrative thread that is both in and out of time.

McGuire has shown her work in solo and in group exhibitions at various venues including the Red Head Gallery, the Artist Project, Project Gallery, Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, Riverdale Artwalk, Elora Centre for the Arts, the Gladstone Hotel, the Postmark Hotel, Latcham Arts Centre and as part of the DesignTO Festival.
